A version of the Black Death is still present today, DNA tests on 109 skeletons of plague victims in a medieval London mass grave found part of the same gene sequence as the modem bubonic plague.

“This part of the genetic information has barely changed in the past 600 years” said Johannes Krause, one of the authors of the study. But modern outbreaks have been far less deadly, even before the advent of antibiotics.

The New York prosecution heading the sex assault case against Dominique Strauss-Kahn refused calls from the maid at the centre of the accusations to step down today.

Lawyers for the woman want a special prosecutor appointed.

At question were damaging leaks by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance’s office that forced prosecutors to admit doubts about her credibility.

Meanwhile, the case has not been dismissed and the investigation is continuing.

A dog-sitter was charged who ran a Chihuahua alongside her car at up to 25km/h. Joan Zalk, 29, of Boulder faces animal cruelty charges after witnesses confronted her at the weekend running the pup alongside her Toyota Camry.

Zalk reportedly told officers the dog, named Cooper, “goes ballistic” if it doesn’t walk 5km a day. Witnesses called police after seeing the leashed dog struggling to keep up with the car. Zalk is free on bail and Cooper was not injured. The dog’s owner was out of town at the time of the incident.

Hungary has produced a sexy ad to encourage people to fill out its census online next month.

In the video, posted online, a topless young woman in red underwear, black stockings and holding a whip opens the door to a census taker, who, realising he has arrived at a bad time, tells her she can do the census online.

Kissing got a lesbian actor and her girlfriend escorted off a plane as it sat at a Texan airport, say Southwest Airlines.

The airline said the pair became profane after being reprimanded for what actor Leisha Halley called “one modest kiss”.

Hailey, star of TV drama The L Word and band member of Uh Huh Her, accused the airline of discrimination on Twitter.

A belly dancer and a regional councillor entertained controversial Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi with a “lesbian kiss” at his infamous “bunga bunga” parties, a court has heard.

Karima El Mahroug was just 17 when she put on the show with former dental hygienist turned politician Nicole Minetti, 25, who is said to have recruited girls for the parties.

The details emerged in court documents on the same day the media tycoon’s personal doctor said Berlusconi, 74, had the “sex drive of a man at least 15 years younger and could make love five times a day”.

Somali children have been given guns, grenades, cash and religious books for winning a contest on a radio station linked to al-Qaida.

The BBC reports the winner of the contest, in which kids recited the Koran on air, received an AK-47 and $700, the runner-up got an AK-47 and $500, and third got two hand grenades and $400.
