Fridge salad drawers can contain 750 times the level of bacteria considered safe. Potentially killer bugs, such as E.coli, salmonella and listeria, are among those found in recent testing in the UK.

Samples from 30 frost-free home fridges had an average of 7850 bacteria colony-forming units per square centimetre. Head researcher Paul McDonnell said the findings were worrying.
