According to the most recent data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, an average of 2100 people die each year from suicide, but many more attempts are made. Estimates put the figure at up to 65,000 unsuccessful suicide bids.

Men are more likely than women to end their lives, with 1633 males (77 per cent) and 499 females (23 per cent) taking their own lives in 2009.

Psychiatrist and chairman of Suicide Prevention Australia, says Australia has national mental health programs aimed at GP response training and increased community connections to reduce isolation for vulnerable groups, including young people, indigenous communities and people leaving psychiatric hospitals.
